After the Kenting trip, I've been keeping myself occupied on the weekends. I took a trip to the Science Museum with Jim to look at the botanical garden display. We played frisbee on this real pretty open area where families set down a blanket and read or play sports. I'm extremely bad at frisbee, it's embarrassing. (At Nitti's graduation party we played a fun frisbee game though and you had to knock these beer bottles off of the posts and if your post got hit you had to drink and stuff. I told myself that would be the last time I attempt to play frisbee.) Anyway, that one little trip helped get me acquainted with the city on my scooter. I live right by one of the main roads that takes you all the way through the entire city, so if I can just find my way back to that road, I'll have no problems with getting lost or finding a good place to eat. I stopped in a real cute coffee shop and the owner was so nice, her and every customer in that store was showing me on a map where I was and how to get home, and that's when I realized that the main road is easy to get to!
November 10th-11th
Saturday, Shija, Jim, and me all planned on meeting by Mitsokoshi department store. There's a cool jade market right next door that had a ton of jewelery and other crafts. I bought some gifts for my family. We ate at this place in the food court Century 21 (I always pass it in Chung yo, but have never been) It was a chicken place and they gave you a family meal for pretty cheap. A small whole chicken, fries, onion rings, sweet potato fries, and 3 drinks, for $499. It was funny because they give you NO utensils, just 3 sets of plastic gloves to eat the chicken with. You're just supposed to dig in with your hands! That night we saw a movie, Moneyball with Brad Pitt. My top choice, because it's Brad Pitt. It was a good movie, as expected. Brad never lets me down.
November 15th-English Singing Competition
We've been practicing a lot for the competition. Every day after lunch and then we usually go into the next class, which normally I don't have so it's ok. The day before the competition we had a long practice and Sabrina wanted me to work on the pronunciation of one part of the performance in which 4 of the students recite a poem (that Sabrina wrote.) Some of the words are difficult but we chose students who could read it clearly. Their dance was cute and their English was very good, but Sabrina and I were still worried about the competition. She thought the song would be too easy compared to the other groups. I was able to take off all day that Tuesday to help with practice and to get to the competition by 1pm. The students were nervous and didn't gave much confidence prior to their performance. They definitely had it down to a tee..so much that they were like robots during practice. No emotion and a stone face while doing these brady bunch dances and singing "You Are My Sunshine." I told them they have to be really cheesy and smile the whole time. It's just ONE performance, who cares how you look...it's more nerve racking to perform in front of your peers than in front of random people you don't know. (The previous day they had to perform for their peers and I guess they didn't do too well.)
The school where the competition was held, was pretty close to us. They had 3 different groups competing. One for each sized school. We were placed in the middle-sized-school group. Once we got the set list at the school I was excited to see that we were original and were the only ones signed up to sing "You are my sunshine.." A ton of groups were singing the same song! There was 2 Mama Mia's, 3 Do Re Mi's, 2 We Can Change the World, and 2 I Will Follow Him's. The other songs were one's I've never even heard..and I was the only foreigner teacher who was at the competition (which really surprised me??) I showed the kids the set list and explained to them "Look, only 1 you are my sunshine..look..1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 1, 2 and pointed to the repeated songs." They understood and they all got real pumped up. One boy was like "Yes! we are different!" We weren't set to go on until the 7th slot out of 11 groups. I kept marks on the list saying, "good, bad, no chance, pretty good.." There were some interesting performances..and then some very very boring and awkward ones..Almost painful to watch..At one point I HAD to go pee and I waited until this one performance was done and walked through all of these rows of people in the auditorium and I get to the door and this guys shuts right as a I walk up and I go, "Oh sorry I need to go to the bathroom.." And he just goes "No. you can't." and I was like.."um yes I have to..the next group hasn't started..please.." he kept saying no so I literally scooted by him and opened the door and he goes "You can't come back in!!" and I'm like.."Ok fine I have to go!" So I peed, go to wash my hands, and there's a boy with bright pink lipstick on and blush washing his hands, and nonchalantly he looks at me and asks.."Where you from?" Then these girls from one performance who are aboriginal girls from the mountains, asked to take all these pictures with me like I was famous, and then I came back, waited for the performance to be done, and the same guy opens the doors and I go to come back in and he goes "Hey you lie to me, you trick me, you say you won't come back!" I'm like.."what? I'm a teacher I have to come back in?? I had to pee, it was an emergency." It wasn't worth any more breaths after that so I just walked away from him. My principal and supervisor, Mark, were there, so if there were any problems they would say something to the guy. Such a production to just pee during a 5 hour event. Are you not allowed to take any breaks??

Everyone was so happy! I asked Sabrina what she was thinking when they were calling out the places, and she said she was thinking of what she should say to the students if they didn't call our names haha. We all went out to a restaurant afterwards. It was a "steak house." Not like a super fancy one, but it was paid for by the school which was nice! I thought I ordered my steak medium but they go by percentages here...So technically I ordered it 50% cooked which to me..it looked like it was 20% cooked! I had them take it back and cook it more..The kids played some game where they'd make this gross concoction out of food and drinks and they'd do a hand motion (like rock paper scissors) and eliminate each other one by one, and the last person left had to drink the concoction. This real cute little girl ( The only 7th grader in the group) had to drink some of it and I felt so bad! Then this boy got stuck drinking a really gross one that had chocolate and vinegar and he starts to gag and almost throws up all over the floor at this steakhouse..and this is the only group of kids there so you would think Sabrina would keep them in line a little and make them settle down, but they were running around as if we were at a Chuckie Cheese. She just sat back and observed and giggled and then I finally said something and when the boy was gagging I was like, "TAKE HIM TO THE BATHROOM!" Sure enough, he puked in the bathroom.
Overall, the kids were very happy and Sabrina called her husband to tell him the good news and then he asked to talk to me and told me "Congratulations Diana!" and Mark told the principal the outcome and he was super happy. I hope they don't expect 1st place for Reader's Theatre in the spring..but I got that competitive spirit goin, I'll try to get it!
The next day, Wenli had me sign off on a piece of paper and I asked what it was for and she said I get 600 NT for winning the competition. It's like, $20 but still that was pretty cool! And then all the students started to come into the office to sign the sheet, they get 300 NT for winning! I thought that was interesting!
Saturday November 19th
I woke up early to skype with Ashli. Well not really skype, but that googleplus thing. Same thing really! We had to cut it early because I planned to go meet up with Shija at this Travel Agency. I took my scooter there and I got a little turned around, but not necessarily lost. It's by the area that Caroline showed me my first couple of weeks. The area that I love. The cafe's, restaurants, and shopping is all over there. The travel agency was this cute tiny office in the top of a building that was being renovated, so it literally was completely torn apart in the entrance way. No floors, no door, boarded up elevator, but you were still allowed to walk inside to get to this office and you could take the boarded up elevator there. The travel agency was run by this real sweet lady, Elizabeth, and her husband. It was decorated with a ton of pictures, maps, and travel brochures. She's actually from the Philippines so she was the perfect person to help me and Shija with our trip! We're going to go to Boracay Island in the Philippines. It looks beautiful and I'm really excited! She helped us choose a good amount of days and she booked our flights. I'm going January 18th-25th and it can't come soon enough! After Chinese New Year, it's smooth sailing from then on. The rest of my school year should fly by..which at this point is bittersweet because I'm actually enjoying the teaching and the kids and I feel like the school wants me to stay.
After our meeting, Shija and I went to get a reallll breakfast at the Early Bird Diner. Of course were skeptical about any breakfast out here..my typical breakfast consists of either raisin bran or an egg sandwich with cucumbers and ketchup and horrible bacon that I usually pull off (I just don't have the patience to change up my order after all these weeks.) So we decided to order 2 things and split them and went with the french toast and denver omelet with hash browns, toast, and a side of bacon. It. was. amazing. We both agreed that it was like..the best french toast, and not just for Taiwan, for french toast in general. Even the hash browns were those real good red potatoes with the grilled onions and rosemary. I was impressed. AND they brought out real butter and syrup and unlimited coffee.
After breakfast, we took a trip to the Science Museum. Our trip from the travel office to the restaurant and now to the museum, was the very first time I ever rode someone on my scooter. I was terrified. Shija was well aware that I was scared, but her confidence was comforting haha. We made it to these locations in one piece. The science museum was a good idea for this day because it was gloomy and rainy. She had two free tickets to the 3D movies there. The ticket booth people were telling us to go all over the museum until we found the right spot and then they told us "the movies are in Chinese..no subtitles either.." But luckily, the first movie didn't have any words. It was this 3D pixar turtle movie. It was cute, kind of scary for kids at time considering its 3D and he's trying to get killed for 30 minutes straight. One young boy was just screaming crying bloody murder for most of it. The 2nd 30 minute movie was Happy Feet. That one could've used some subtitles but overall it was fine. Not something I'd ever pay money for but I'm glad we used the free tickets!
Sunday, November 20th- K-Pop Concert!!! (Korean Pop)
The long awaited concert is upon us. Many sleepless nights of creating sparkly signs and wrapping small gifts for this teen pop sensation has all amounted to this one night..I'm only speaking for Wenli.. I was excited about the concert and all, but she was on another level! The whole week she was sending me you tube videos of songs, fan websites, pictures, and links to commercials that Minho stars in. She also told me that she has a small birthday present for the love of her life, Minho (Whose birthday is December 6th) that she needs to drop it off before we enter the concert. The sign she made for me was cute! It says, "Chicago <3 SHINee." The commute out to Taipei was long because we took the slow train ride out there and planned on taking the high speed back home. As expected, the outside of the auditorium was PACKED with adolescents..if it wasn't for the fact it's in an entirely different city, I'd be afraid we'd run into all of our students. We stood by a door way that was by our entrance and there were a bunch of fans with signs, balloons, and other SHINee memorabilia and Wenli asked why they were standing along this entrance and a few fans said that this is where the bands were getting dropped off. Right away Wenli wanted to get up in that crowd. I asked her if she was going to take pictures and she thought that was a strange idea and said "oh no no," because she can always see the pictures and videos online, so she'd rather focus her attention on the group as they walk by. Wow. True fan right there. I told her that I'll probably stand back and take pictures. We got to see the girl group walk by and then the other boy bands, and then finally SHINee. The girls went nuts. Their security wasn't too intimidating though. Must be hard to find giant Taiwanese men.
After the intense 25 seconds of the band walking into the West Gate, we then had to wait in line until the gates opened up at 6:30 pm..except they didn't actually open until 7 pm and we got there at 4pm..so yes..I stood around for quite a while. They had little night market stands around us so Wenli got out of our line to grab some fried chicken. Just like any concert, there's always those die-hard know-it-all fans, and SHINee's fans were no different. Wenli was having these serious conversations with a 15 year old about the boyband. This girl knew everything: what songs they're singing, what time they'll head back to the hotel, what spot in the venue is the best location to see them (and this was a brand new venue!) The gate people were trying to organize the lines because we had front row but other people were trying to line up ahead of us (Wenli wasn't having it..and neither were these 15 year old girls..) One super annoying chick with a giant bear hat who was this super fan was freaking out at the gate people and like trying to rally the crowd into lining up the way she wanted (she's about the age of a college student and she's attending this concert by herself..enough said..) then Wenli went up to the gate guards and had this calm mature conversation with them and said "just line everyone up the way you want.." The nerdy college fan was not a happy camper. So even though our tickets were for front row, it was kind of a first come first serve basis. We were number 7 and 8 in line so no big deal I was thinking, but the the guards advised us that when they opened the gates, we are NOT allowed to run to our spots, we need to walk, it's unsafe to run. Wenli and the 15 year olds were not about to listen to these directions and Wenli said "maybe..maybe we will run so we can stand in the spot we want by the stage.." Ok guess we're running..Sooo we did..everyone started out with this awkward speed walk and it turned into a full-on sprint. We beat the bear hat girl, thank god, and got a great spot. Right up against the fence in front of the stage. The bear hat girl was about two "rows" behind but she owned a camera with lens that practically reached the fence I was standing at. Unbelievable. She wasn't the only one with a professional camera like that either, there were a few girls switching through their lens' throughout the concert! Why do you own that at your age and WHY in the world would you bring it to a boyband concert..? I also thought it was veryyyy bizarre that the entire venue was practically EMPTY except for the closer seating by the stage. I asked Wenli why it wasn't sold out and how come there's only a few people out in the stands, and she said "Well if people don't get the close tickets then they won't even bother going because it's not worth it when you're in the stands." I told her that it's very different in America. People usually buy tickets no matter where they sit. Most of the concerts I've attended were completely sold out and most of the time I sit out in the stands!
The first group to come on was a band with about 15 members..very strange. They were called Zia. The second group was called MBLAQ, there was only 5 boys in that one. For entertainment purposes only, Wenli and I picked out one boy from each group that we thought was cute (you know it's bad when even I think these guys are too young..) Actually, the one from the second group was pretty attractive. I think he was the only one who didn't dress like a girl and wasn't skinnier and shorter than me. Then again, I'm probably getting blinded by my own desperation. Their music was catchy..techno mixed with hip hop I guess..The 3rd group was a girl group called Sistar. They looked like.. Asian Barbies (I can't remember the Asian barbie's name..I think it was Kira? I think Kristen owned one, but I'm not sure because she never took her barbies out of their boxes) and they had these tiny sparky star dresses on that were SO short that I could see their booty shorts underneath and they danced in these super tall high heels. The lead singer was really good, she had the same type of voice as Beyonce, I swear! The funny thing about all of these Korean groups was that their songs had English titles but they would sing all in Korean and then say random English phrases and words and boom, that was the title. The last group was the one that the crowd was waiting for. SHINee! Wenli warned me that she'd be screaming loud..and yes she did. All of the bands were very close to us and would look down and wave so Wenli was making sure I'd hold up my sign because they'd definitely spot the only foreigner in the crowd. SHINee was good, I guess I could see why they're better than the other groups? but they were all pretty similar. It's like NSYNC (clearly the best of them all) Backstreet Boys 98 degrees..Hanson? (oh speaking of Hanson, I saw on facebook that they came out with a beer called "MMM Hop" haha) The hosts of the concert would walk out after each group sang one song and do a small interview with the band. They'd ask corny questions like "who has a girlfriend, who's the most athletic, who's the youngest.." Wenli translated. It was interesting to me that the fans didn't know Korean but loved the music and the groups, and the groups didn't know any Chinese so the host would ask them "say any Chinese words you know!" (very familiar to my brief speech at the Teacher's day dinner where I spat out any words I knew and the crowd was so excited.) But I can say that I know wayyy more Chinese than the members of SHINee which is quite the accomplishment..I think it may be resume worthy. Wenli was right about her idol, Minho, he is the cutest one up there..him and some other kid who is his "best friend" in the group, Jongshun or something? It was entertaining. They sang only 5 songs though!! "Juliette, Ring Ding Dong, Hello Hello, Ready or Not, and of course their #1 hit, Lucifer." It was very entertaining, short but sweet. The concert ended early (which Wenli was upset about) and our ride home was quick.Wenli's brother and sister picked us up from the train station and took me home by 11pm. Ever since that concert, I've had the great pleasure of receiving weekly emails from Wenli that contain more and more videos of Minho.

Some Heartbreaking News : (
After the concert, I found out some very sad news about one of my best friends, Frankie. His younger brother, Michael, had unexpectedly died earlier that Sunday. Stacy wrote me an email with the news and it was such a tragic thing to hear about. It was also devastating that this happened the same week that his dad was going in for a bone marrow transplant on Wednesday. My heart ached for Frankie and his family because they're such a nice family and it must be so hard to go through something like that through the holidays. I couldn't sleep the next couple of nights. It's frustrating to not be able to pick up a phone and call someone when this kind of news comes up. Frankie has been a good friend of mine since high school and he's such a genuine person with a huge heart. He's always been there for me and I wish I could be there for him during this time. I hate to see when people die at a young age. Unfortunately, I've attended a few funeral services for friends my age and I think it's one of the most difficult losses to face but it also gives you a new found appreciation for life and how you shouldn't take anything for granted. Especially the love and support of your family members.

November 24th- A Very Taiwanese Thanksgiving
So the entire week at school was of course my favorite type of week because it was a holiday themed week. Each class made a feather to put on this turkey body that I cut out, and they all had to write what they were thankful for on it. One word, one phrase. Easy. It was a cute activity, I did a brief intro of what it means to be thankful and why we give thanks and I gave them examples of what they could write. Some of the students were doing the bare minimum and just writing family in chicken scratch and handing it in, so I added more detail to the assignment and said they had to be creative and couldn't just write family and friends. They had to add detail like "My helpful parents, my funny friend, my smart sister, my cute dog." The result was entertaining and the kids loved their turkey. Two 8th grade boys decided to write "my sexy girl" which normally..would be inappropriate but in Taiwan, it's ok because a lot of people use the word "sexy" here and it's not in the same context as we use it (for example when the principal first introduced me to the parents of my students, he said "This is our new teacher, Diana, she is very sexy"..he meant pretty..I almost had a heart attack when I found out he said that..) I surprisingly made it through the week with only one actual inappropriate answer..I don't even think I should type it out, but shockingly, it came from this 8th grade boy, Jack, who is indeed a troublemaker, but he acts as if he speaks NO English..literally I have never heard him utter an English word, he gets by without doing any of my assignments and practically sleeps on his desk every week and so on and so forth..so for him to write that he's thankful for "My big ****" was a bit startling. He got in trouble. Big trouble. Besides that minor issue, I had some funny answers that were appropriate and creative answers not involving body parts.

On Thursday morning I had my presentation on Thanksgiving and it went great. I ended up bringing in my own laptop so I could play the videos that my family took when they celebrated Thanksgiving the previous weekend. My cousin Michelle took videos of the table setting, the pre-eating activities (aka drinking and more eating) my brother carving the turkey, and my cousins saying Grace. The students and staff loved it and they were all very interested in what was going on in the videos. In the very beginning it shows my family down at my Aunt Jolene's bar having drinks and appetizers and watching football. It's such a funny video because everyone's talking at once and trying to say something and their shoving wine bottles and beers into the camera's view...but I had to leave it in! It was just too realistic to cut out haha. During the presentation was when I realized how loud that video clip actually was, I was like "ya..we all like to talk a lot..holidays are never quiet." When they got to the turkey carving, everyone could hear my brother's voice but didn't see him until the end of the clip and when he showed his face and the students all saw his crazy beard, they started laughing. That's when I realized.."Wait.. No one in Taiwan has beards!" I loved the videos mainly because I felt like I was right there with my family. Mark talked with the students after I presented and told them something along the lines of "Diana is very sad and lonely hear in Taiwan without her family, so make sure you make her feel good." And I didn't realize that was what he said until I asked him later on why a lot of my students randomly would approach me and be like, "Teacher! Teacher, Hi!..are you sad today, do you miss your family?"
That night, me, Shija, Jim, and Lien met up at The Early Bird cafe for Thanksgiving dinner. It was a set menu for the night with turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing, bread, pumpkin soup, apple pie, and coffee for 600NT They were only offering that for their menu that night and Lien didn't want that and wanted to order from a regular menu, so we went across the street to Fingas. Same deal, but since we already had made the reservation at Early Bird, we went back across the street to eat there. Everything tasted good, the food got a little cold but the flavor was still delicious! The dessert was probably the best. It was apple pie ala mode (we made the server heat up the pie and add ice cream though.) It was nice to have a thanksgiving meal..even if you couldn't get up for seconds. Ugh I miss the leftover mashed potatoes, turkey, and stuffing after 10pm when you get that second wind. Drooling.
November 25th-26th- My Golden Birthday
I found out that there's going to be a fundraiser for Frankie's family on Saturday. Nitti told me that they have so many people donating raffle items and awesome prizes and every single dime goes towards his family. The whole community is really coming together and giving their support which is really cool. I got a present from the Nanny family which was exciting. Connor and Garrett made me these cute cards and they got me my favorite candy, coffee, and an iTunes card (woo hooo I can watch movies!) I got to skype with them shortly after and thanked them. Wenli got me a cute gift of these lotions from Korea (SHINee advertises them on tv..surprise surprise!) and this giant lollipop. Chiao got me this real nice soap and lotion from L'occotaine and when I got to my desk, there were flowers and a gift from Melody (the pta mom)
At midnight, (The 25th for me, the 24th for everyone else) I skyped with my parents to finally open my birthday package that had been circulating around Taichung City. It should've arrived last Wednesday, but I got it at the school this Wednesday and promised I wouldn't open it until my actual birthday (Kristen bet me that I couldn't wait that long..I was the kid that snooped in the closets for my presents) and I waited! There was a whole system to the gift. First open this card, then this gift, THEN you can open this card, and then it doesn't matter what gifts. I was sad, I got candles (a 2 and a 5) but didn't have anything to put them in! The first card I instantly knew was Stacy's handwriting which got me real excited. I just assumed it was something small like a starbucks card or something, but it was a card with a nice message about the gift that everyone pitched in and got me and it had all these signatures! It was Stacy, Kristen, Kari, Frankie, Gina, Ashley, Nitti, Daniela, Courtney, Caitlin, Sarah, and Tracy. I was caught off guard reading all of the signatures and it instantly made me cry. I'm truly blessed to have the family and friends that I have. The gift was in this pretty gold box and it was a silver charm bracelet from Pandora. Kristen and my friends had chipped in and got me a few of the charms, a soccer ball, an apple for being a teacher, and my birthstones and my Mom, Dad, and Grandma got me a suitcase and a butterfly charm and the stoppers that go on the chain. It's such a pretty bracelet. I also got some other gifts from them and then my Aunt Jolene got me this pretty compact mirror from Things Remembered that has my name and birth date engraved in it.
At school, the staff and students did a lot of nice things for my birthday. I would have random students visit me in my office and hand me their cute little cards and Mark and Joe rolled their chairs over to my desk and had me pick out pizzas on the Domino's website for my pizza party lunch that day. Excitinggg! They kept asking if I wanted seafood pizza and I'm like.."nooo that's ok..you can have seafood pizza if you want..I'll have pepperoni and Hawaiian"..and Joe's like.."oo look they have super Hawaiian, it has shrimp on it.." and I'm like.."nope that's ok, regular Hawaiian is good..unless you want shrimp on your pizza, then go ahead and order one" and Marks like...Ohh a taco pizza..and I was like "nu uh I know what that means, it means octopus pizza.." and he's like.."yaa do you like?" I had to break the whole passive act and finally said, "no I don't like seafood on my pizza, I think it's weird. I'll take this kind of pizza but feel free to order whatever YOU want as well." Every pizza he would show me his eyes would light up and he'd get all excited and then finally when he asked about some kind of beef pizza I had given up and just said, sure I'll try it..The pizza party was good, we had about 6 different pizzas, including an apple dessert one! Just like my pizza hut buffet days :) The beef pizza was promising until Domino's decided it was a good idea to serve it with ketchup drizzled on top. How gourmet. The pepperoni and Hawaiian were the best. Class 208 (My class with Beryl) sang happy birthday for me and they all signed a big birthday card. Beryl gave me this pretty book mark that has the "4 Virtues" on it. A real quiet student of mine, Angel, knitted me a scarf! How crazy is that! So nice of her. And lastly, the principal gave me a nice tea set with pretty blue flowers on it. Overall, it was a good day at school and my students and colleagues tried their best to make me feel at home.
| Angel and the scarf |
That night, I still went to Chinese class, but I had made plans to meet up with my friend Caroline at the club, Babe 09, afterwards. Before class, Shija and I went to the Thai place. It was good as usual and she bought my dinner for my birthday! Chinese class was cute because Jim, Jeff, and Caron, came over to our classroom during break time and sang Happy Birthday in Chinese to me! Shenri Kuai Le! Caron gave me this really cute card that had a bunch of confetti inside. Wasn't expecting it but again, I really appreciated everything that people did for me that day. The whole week was kind of a mess and I was apprehensive to spend a birthday and Thanksgiving without my family but it's comforting to know that I have people out here who care enough to do things like that for me.
After class, I went home to get ready to go out. I bought a few hefeweizen beers to drink beforehand and tried on a few outfits. I get excited to wear heels, and the super cheap heels I get at the night market are so comfortable and you literally aren't in pain at all throughout the night! $12 Taiwanese shoes, can't beat that! I asked Caroline what she was wearing just for some reassurance that my short skirt was acceptable and I felt kind of stupid asking this question...I guess I just assume Taiwanese girls aren't as high maintenance and don't care about outfits as much as we do or something, and I don't know Caroline very well but I definitely didn't want to be an outcast in the group..(as if being a foreigner wasn't outcast enough.) And at home, that's always the first question I think of before I go out because after spending so many nights out with Gina, my fashionista friend, I was conditioned to respond to questions like, "So what's your outfit like!? Let's discuss outfits, what are you planning on wearing to this??" right off the bat. We knew outfits before we even knew where we were going. (I miss Gina and her enthusiasm.. always ready to party with me!) But sure enough, Caroline replied right away and said, "tight brown short dress and heels.." Yes! I'm in the clear!
I took a cab to Babe 09 by myself, I live close to a main road that cabs are always on so that helps. Caroline texted me the address in Chinese so I could just show the driver. I waited about 10 minutes for them to arrive and felt kind of weird standing outside of this club by myself. Caroline showed up with 3 of her friends, a girl named Venda and then 2 boys who's names I'm not completely sure of. They all spoke English. Babe09 was $400 NT all you can drink and the DJ was a foreigner and played good music. They told him it was my birthday so he asked what song I wanted to hear, and for some reason I love that new LMFAO song, "Sexy and I know it" haha, so I said that! Sure enough, when it came on, we all got really excited and then this go go dancer brought me on stage and poured liquor in my mouth. It reminded me of Cancun or something. It was a fun time, we acted goofy and tried imitating some girl that was a wanna be go go dancer who danced on stage the entire time, but she did not work there. At the end of the night we went out by the cabs and I asked Caroline if she could tell my driver where to go because they always get confused about my address. So she starts talking to this guy, and he looks at me, and he goes "Yea..I drove her home last time" and Caroline's like.."Um he says he drove you home from here last time?" I was like..oh my god..it's the cab driver with the crazy music!!! Up in here up in here! I was like "yes I remember, I liked your music!" And sure enough, he had some more jams for me on my way home. I got back to my apartment and "drunk dialed" whoever was on skype.

Saturday, the 26th, was the day that some Dewey people planned on meeting up for my birthday at night. Caron and Jeff were out of town for their anniversary, I was sad to not get to see them! During the day, I shopped a little, drank coffee, and then met up with Jim at Tiger City mall for dinner. He gave me a real nice birthday gift which was a tea pot and cups made by a guy in his town and some Starbucks tea. So nice of him! We ate at Chilis and he said he wasn't too hungry, but I told him I wanted to order 2 appetizers but didn't want to look like a fat ass so he had to eat them with me. We got boneless wings with ranch and blue cheese and we got nachos with chicken and steak. I went all out. He told the server, David, it was my birthday. David was so cute and actually the first really attentive server I've had. He wasn't the type of waiter that needed to bring the manager over to the table because they were confused with me asking for blue cheese instead of ranch, he was on top of things. Him and the other servers came out shaking cups of silverware and singing happy birthday and he had a slice of cheesecake for me! It was real good. Shija showed up after her hair cut and she got bangs! Big change! They look good, it's just funny because 90% of the girls here have bangs so her hair's totally going to blend in.
After dinner me and Shija went back to our places to get ready for the night. Jim just gets to wander around the city (he lives too far away to go home.) We planned on meeting by Soho street around 9 which is not quite a street, it's just a little section off of a road that has bars and restaurants down it. Sam and Lien got there first and then Jim got a little lost and Sam had to go find him and Shija got there shortly after. We met the owner of the only bar open that night which was PJ McKenna's. PJ himself was a site to see. He was a real nice guy, very welcoming, hippie-esque qualities, but he went from 0-60 on the drunkness scale in a matter of an hour. He started hitting on Shija like crazy and wouldn't leave her side. She accused me of being a bad wingwoman because of this, but we needed some entertainment, and PJ gazing into Shija's eyes with his half opened eyes, was quite the show. He also started to fall asleep on one of the patio tables and knocked it over but some how managed to wake up in time to save his beer that was spilling. Me and Jim and beers, Shija had some wine, and Sam had his coca cola. There were a lot of other foreigners there but they're pretty strict with the closing time. We had to be out of there by 10:30/11. PJ had a real good microbrew on tap that I could've drinken about 4 of, but they were closing. We didn't really know where to go and Sam, of all people, suggested a bar that was "elementary school" themed. I was just teasin him a bit like, "why do YOU know where a bar is Sam??" bustin his chops because he does not like to be accused of such a thing..drinking!? No way jose. He was like "Hey hey, I didn't wantttt to go there, my co-workers took me there, THEY like to go there--" It was like I was accusing him of wanting to go to a crack house. Too funny.

We made a pit stop at a food stand for some fried chicken and mushrooms and then hopped in a cab to the bar Sam told us about. This place was hidden on a side street that looked a lot like mine. Just a bunch of apartment buildings with a few businesses. You could see a faint spinning light behind a shaded window and apparently, that was the entrance to the bar. We walked in and it was veryyyy interesting. The servers there all stopped and greeted us and sure enough, they were dressed in school uniforms (looked a lot like boyscout uniforms though.) They put us up in a booth and I ordered a big budweiser. Shija's drink order was too complicated for them but luckily Sam invited another Dewey worker, Jeff, out to help us out. Jeff is familiar with the place and could talk to the workers there to describe what kind of mixed drink she wanted. Jim just got an orange juice and Sam got a grapefruit tea. Jeff got vodka lime and it was pure vodka with Rose's lime juice. I ordered that after my beer, I was feeling gusty. I got the impression that everyone was bored or something but I still had a good time. The servers brought a birthday surprise for me and they came out singing and had a sparkler sticking out of something and I'm like..hmm is that cake?? Nope, it was a chicken. They gave me a chicken with a sparkler sticking out of it. That wasn't the only strange thing about this school bar. The managers name was Water, and our server's name was Cola..I made a corny dad joke asking if the bartenders name is Juice, and they didn't like that. The manager loved us though, he wouldn't leave our table, but unfortunately, the drinks Shija and Jim order still didn't come, and we told the manager a few times as he nonchalantly sat at our table drinking his whisky, "hey..we still don't have our drinks..where are they?" and all he would do is say "hmm ya, I'm sorry about that..(sip his drink) so where are you from?" Ha, it was so bizarre. They also had dogs roaming freely in the place. A random husky came right up to us right after they gave me that chicken. It was a real pretty dog..but..it's a dog, in a bar..Then all of the sudden the had this random giant inflatable Nemo fish flying all over the bar and turns out it was a remote control fish. So some server kept making the thing float over to us! So..school bells every 30 minutes, chickens with sparklers, dogs, and remote control inflatables. Can't say you can find that in America.
