August 31st, 2011

Today was my third day at work, second day of teaching. I got to the bus at 7:10 and it got me at 7:20, I thought this was perfect because then I’ll get coffee and go to the school. So I walk into the school at 7:40 with my coffee and Wenli is like, “Why are you so early again! Did you take the bus??” I didn’t think I was that early..when they tell me to be at the school by 8 they probably mean 8:20 or something backwards.  This little latte I got from the family mart is really good. It was made by an espresso machine so it wasn’t some weird Nescafe thing. I got a latte and another little Hawaiian bread roll thing for 60 NT (1.50?) Joe told me that I have to try his ice coffee and he pulls out some other coffee contraption to make it! It looked like a fat syringe thing, you press the tube all the way forward and the hotwater gets pushed through the filter of coffee. Kind of a backwards French press. Anyways, it was delicious. Today was slow because I only had one class and it was 3rd period. The other class I will have starting next week, is “English Club” and it’s a double period. In that class we just have to do fun English things like watch movies and listen to music. I like it. The class I had went well. It was the 4th time doing that lesson plan so of course it was better than the others. I forgot to mention that I had to give English names to a lot of these 7th graders. So weird! They wouldn’t have a name written down so I had a little list of names, boy names and girls, and I started giving out names. I also went by their looks and would give names that weren’t on my list. I think I used up all of my girlfriends’ names, guy friend’s names and my sister’s name, a lot of children to name. There’s already a few Nicks. No Bobby’s, some Nancy’s. Some of them laugh and think it’s funny to get a new name, others roll their eyes because they’re in junior high and think I’m lame. I’m so not lame, I was conjuring up names by the minute.

After class, one of my supervisors, Mark, told me that they have a bike they could fix up and give to me if I was interested. I’m interested and it’ll be so convenient, but I’m seriously scared to ride it out here.
Lunch was way better today.  Chicken and veggies in this good sauce (those damn bones are so annoying though.) Rice, some special flower soup that is good, and then scrambled eggs with carrots (that was my favorite.) The fruit was a guava, which I guess I’ve never really had? I love guava flavored Jarritos, but never actually bit into one. It’s got this pear texture but not juicy really..not that sweet either. We went back to the office and it was rest time again. I just put on my headphones and worked on lesson plan ideas..and typed this stuff up. Joe asked me if I was writing a novel haha. I was like, “no just keeping a journal.”  I came up with a lesson plan/game for next week and got to make these little cards and I laminated them all by myself, like a real live teacher! That took up a good amount of time. Then Wenli asked if I was interested in seeing the gym they have upstairs because I can work out there before or after school. I pictured GBN’s stinky gross gym and I wasn’t too excited but needed something to do. This gym was so cool. Totally brand new, new tv’s, bikes, elliptical, treadmill, weights, and something that I thought was a scale but you stand on and it shakes. Wenli got on it and was like “See it just shakes all of your fat off!!” She’s so little though haha. I’ll definitely stay after and use that gym BUT it’s soo humid, and it’s on the 5th floor so it seems hotter, but then again the fans weren’t on. I sat around my desk for a while with not much to do. This nice guy, whom I met at lunch but can’t remember his name already, came around with Moon cakes!! Yayy moon festival is next week or in 2 weeks and people eat these moon cake things like crazy. They were awesome and tasted like those sphere shaped cookies you get at the bakery that aren’t too sweet and have a little glaze on them. I was so happy to get one and he came around and gave me a second : )

Tonight I’m going to go over to the night market and hopefully order food. I also wish I had some tops and dresses that were cooler (not style cool but temperature cool.) I can’t believe how much I’ve been sweating. The rain really makes it sooo humid. Last week it was just sunny hot. I’m going to sleep so good tonight. My bed is awesome and Lien gave me a link with free American tv shows!! Maybe I’ll finally finish my wine.
